In the end, nature won out and Joshua trudged down the sidewalk towards the low-slung

brick building that contained the rest area and tourist info center. The air hung thick with the metallic scent of car exhaust and diesel fumes, and the roar of passing semi trucks made the ground shake underneath his feet. He read it as an ill omen, and ill omen sent by God.

He walked into the men’s room and relieved himself at the urinal, making a point not to

make eye contact with any of the people who stared at him and his rumpled Amish attire as he passed. He said a silent prayer as he washed his hands at the filthy sink, asking God’s

forgiveness for getting himself into this mess, for committing yet another sin, for being in this Godforsaken English place at all.
